Biography

Louise Newman began her studies in the late eighties in San Jose, California. Upon returning to her native Ireland, she attended Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design, and Technology, where she graduated in 2003 with a B.A in Fine Art. In 2005, Newman's work was viewed on a national scale when she appeared on R.T.E Open House Emerging Artists of the year in association with Irish Arts Review. Her work was first highlighted at Éigse / Carlow Arts Festival.

Newman’s work has been exhibited at Galway Arts Centre, The Hallward Gallery, Signal Gallery, Gallery 4, Urban Retreat Gallery, Sol Art Gallery, among others.

In 2012, she was invited to exhibit in a group show for The Prince's Trust at Somerset House in the U.K.

Her work can be viewed in the public collections of The Department of Defence, Bank of Ireland HQ, the Office of Public Works, The Flynn Hotel Group, The Haddington Hotel, The Irish League of Credit Unions, Touchstone Healthcare,

Blackrock Eye Care (Dr. Kathryn McCreery), and in several private collections both in Ireland and internationally.

Newman’s formal concerns have always been rooted deeply in the tradition of landscape painting. She’s drawn inspiration from specific locales, and her modes of addressing these places have varied considerably over the years.

Her long and very personal relationship with the West Coast of Ireland, residencies at The Cill Rialaig Project in Co. Kerry, and time spent in Connemara and West Clare has resulted in this series of works.
